Ocular prosthesis

Abstract: Loss of an eye or a disfigured eye has a far-reaching impact on an individual's psyche'. Additionally it affects one's social and professional life. Cosmetic rehabilitation with custom made prosthetic devices gives such individuals professional and social acceptance and alleviates problems. This article aims at enhance awareness of the cosmetic benefits of custom designed ocular prosthesis. “…Evisceration involves removing the ocular contents but preserving the sclera and sometimes, the cornea (Morton 2003). It is important for anopthalmic patients to have prosthesis to prevent the collapse of orbital bony structure which leads to facial asymmetry that may be socially unacceptable (Raizada & Rani 2007). Ocular prosthesis can be either ready-made (stock) or custom made.…”

“…It is important to note that several factors can influence the flexural resistance of acrylic resin, including the components used, particles in the environment (Raizada and Rani, 2007), porosity associated to the technique (Canadas et al, 2010) and surface flaws of the appliance (Pavarina et al, 2003). Conclusively, the polymerization technique (wet or dry pressure) does not affect the flexural resistance of chemically-activated acrylic resin.…”

“…6 Glass was the preferred prosthetic material at the time. However, owing to difficulty in modelling and its fragile nature, glass is seldom used today.…”

“…The modern ocular prosthesis should be inert and easily mouldable and PMMA is currently the material of choice. 6 Using pre-stocked painted prostheses has been previously described. Teicher et al 7 described a technique for the use of prefabricated ocular prostheses immediately after the surgery.…”
