Abstract

Guatemala Teatro Vivo women stay at home to take care of the chores. The work is hard. They have to clear the land, plough it, make sure that the rabbits don't get the young plants. They even have to protect the land from other people who like to cause problems. And all this work will be for nothing if God does not bless them with rain. It is faith that sustains the family now. Faith that it will rain, faith that the land is good, because they do not have money to buy fertilisers, etc. At harvest, half or more will go to the loan shark and other debts to pay for the corn and beans that had to be bought to eat in the meantime. The play finishes with the father coming home after the harvest drunk and beaten up and without money to pay the loan shark. The group held a discussion about this ending, but it was agreed upon because this is what happens so often. They wanted to make the point, hoping that people would change this situation which brings so much tragedy to the families.
