Patient admission to the Intensive Care Unit leads to pathological changes in the stomatognathic system. Most of the time, due to the absence of enteral feeding when patients are intubated, xerostomia is widely observed, increasing the risk of intraoral opportunistic infections. These infections, in turn, can lead to other systemic complications, increasing hospitalization time and costs and requiring prolonged pharmacological therapies, thus increasing the morbidity and mortality rate. In view of this, considering the preventive aspects, the presence of a dental surgeon in the Intensive Care Unit promotes oral hygiene care for patients, favouring quality of life and improvements in hospital care.

Hospital dentistry is currently of great importance due to the context of socioeconomic inequalities in Brazil, where a significant part of the population cannot afford private dental treatments. This a very important field because socioeconomic inequalities in the country make access to private dental treatments difficult, emphasizing the need for dental care services to be offered in hospitals. The main objective of this study was to highlight the relevance of the dental surgeon and dentists in hospitals, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs), where this professional plays a crucial role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases that may interfere with medical treatment and worsen patients’ conditions. This article also explores the advances of hospital dentistry in Brazil and the correlation between oral health and various diseases, stressing the need for proper treatment. The research was conducted through a qualitative literature review in databases such as SciELO, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The literature indicates that the presence of a dentist in the multidisciplinary ICU team is indispensable, especially for treating oral complications related to intubation and extubation. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the role of the hospital dentist became even more crucial, helping to prevent hospital-acquired infections originating from the oral cavity of intubated patients. Thus, this study reinforces the importance of hospital dentistry in Brazil for providing better quality of life for hospitalized patients.

Objetivo: Analisar a relevância da integração da equipe multiprofissional na odontologia hospitalar. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma ampla revisão da literatura em que a construção da pesquisa está amparada na questão "Qual é a relevância da integração da equipe multiprofissional em odontologia hospitalar?" A pesquisa foi conduzida em 2024, por meio da consulta às bases de dados BBO, LILACS e no Portal Regional da BVS. Resultados: A integração da equipe multiprofissional em odontologia hospitalar desempenha um papel fundamental na promoção da saúde bucal e no cuidado abrangente aos pacientes internados. Essa abordagem colaborativa, destacada por diversos estudos, não apenas previne infecções bucais e a transmissão de microrganismos, mas também contribui para a prevenção de complicações sistêmicas, controle de infecções, redução de custos e diminuição do tempo de permanência hospitalar. A atuação conjunta permite uma abordagem holística, considerando aspectos bucais, sistêmicos e psicossociais, resultando em assistência integral, humanizada e segura. Conclusão: Em suma, a integração da equipe multiprofissional em odontologia hospitalar vai além das necessidades bucais, contribuindo para uma abordagem global, coordenada e aprimorando a qualidade do atendimento e o resultado geral do tratamento.
