Progesterone-primed ewe lambs from several selection flocks were assessed for their responsiveness to oestrogen at 5 months of age by measuring the time between injection of 20 fLg oestradiol benzoate and the onset of the induced oestrus. Oestrus was induced in over 90% of the 577 lambs tested, the time of its onset varying from 17 h to more than 34 h after injection of oestrogen. The variation in response of the lambs among selection flocks was not correlated with the fertility of their dams. Birth rank and age had no effect on the response. Lambs which responded within 34 h ('responders') were I kg heavier on average than 'nonresponders' at the time of treatment. Live weight at 18 months of age was correlated with the time to onset of oestrus (r = -0.13, P<0.05) in 'responders'. The median time to onset of the induced oestrus was shorter (P
