Of mice and mental health: facilitating dialogue and seeing further

Abstract: The science of mental life is critical for understanding both how we function, and impairments in our functioning. However, understanding the causal mechanisms underlying mental health disorders and developing new treatments are challenges too great to be solved by any individual approach. There is a growing awareness that translational research—from laboratory to patient and back again to animal models—will be critical for the improved understanding and treatment of mental health disorders. The motivation and… Show more

“…Such a mechanism requires a range of disciplines, including psychology, digital science, and social sciences. 31,72 International collaboration will ensure the necessary research skills and expertise. Research should harness internet-based social media and gaming using existing platforms and be cognisant of the so-called digital divide, which leaves 15% of Britons without internet access.…”

“…Recent advances in fear research have provided insight into the detailed neural circuits that support fearful behaviour and allow its modulation while also allowing a better understanding of currently available treatments for anxiety disorders. A deeper understanding of fear learning has also identified some potential novel treatment avenues that warrant further research in progressively more translational models 110 .…”

“…The successful generation of mental health treatments has relied and continues to rely heavily on the translation of animal research, particularly that in rodent models (Milton & Holmes, 2018). While there is not a perfect rodent model for any particular human affective disorder, the establishment of 1 The concept of qing has changed over time and the description here is appropriate for the Ming Dynasty, but not necessarily appropriate in earlier texts, for example, those conveyed by Mencius.…”
