Nelisita (Carvalho, 1982, Nelisita: narrativas nianeka), a pioneering African vernacular‐language fiction film from the early phase of Angolan cinema, inspired me to conduct a series of interconnected exercises in visual anthropology. I produced an experimental archive‐based remake (Ponte, 2016, 127 stills or 34 scenes from Nelisita) and screened it in both transnational urban contexts and an Angolan rural context reminiscent of the film's setting. This article discusses the multi‐sited chain of production and reception of this short archival remake and various localized contemporary responses to it. The article examines an evolving concern with the materiality of the archive and how both foreign urban and familiar rural audiences received the film's narrative and change of genre.

Kuduro , meaning "hard-ass" or "in a hard place," is a contemporary genre of music and dance produced and consumed in Angola, especially in Luanda. This article maps kuduro historically and assesses it in its current moment. While the dance is full of invention and the genre has thrived in the informal economy, this alternative expression and the infrastructure it produces cannot be considered politically or economically liberatory. But the international "os Kuduristas" campaign promoted by two of the Angolan president's children and companies they own shows the dangers of a culturally conservative discourse that dismisses kuduro as a vulgar popular phenomenon while hegemonic political and commercial forces embrace it.Résumé: Kuduro, qui signifie "dur à cuire" ou "dans une passe difficile," est un genre contemporain de musique et de danse venant d'Angola, en particulier du Luanda. Cet article présente le Kuduro dans son évolution historique et évalue son impact actuel. Bien que la danse soit pleine d'invention et que le genre ait prospéré dans l'économie informelle, cette expression alternative et l'infrastructure qu'elle produit ne peut pas être considérée comme politiquement ou économiquement libéra-trice. En même temps, la campagne internationale "os Kuduristas" promue par deux des enfants du président angolais et les compagnies qu'ils possèdent, montre les dangers d'un discours culturellement conservateur qui rejette le Kuduro comme un vulgaire phénomène populaire tandis que des forces politiques et commerciales hégémoniques se l'approprient pour promouvoir leur discours.

<p>Este artigo procura oferecer uma visão panorâmica das histórias do audiovisual nos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP) desde suas independências. A criação de novos estados-nações em 1974 e 75 levou ao “nascimento” destas histórias. Na apresentação do percurso delas haverá um enfoque crítico na ainda atual e necessária realização de uma descolonização da mente, bem como na transnacionalidade da produção audiovisual no contexto dos países soberanos, que resultou da inexistência de possiblidades de formação em Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau e Moçambique. Consequentemente, profissionais de diversos países foram envolvidos no estabelecimento de práticas do audiovisual durante e depois das lutas anticoloniais e na tentativa de emancipar os espectadores. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho atualiza estudos já existentes por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica do conhecimento desenvolvido nos últimos anos acerca da produção e análise das obras audiovisuais criadas entre 1974 e 2015.</p>
