This paper presents a new control method and a detailed project methodology for the optimized connection method of two converters, aiming to reduce the redundant power processing, in order to supply high power LEDs with reduced capacitance and high efficiency, directly from the AC line. This connection method allows dealing with two major issues related to the LED driver: capacitance reduction and efficiency increasing. The first converter provides Power Factor Correction (PFC), while the second converter controls the current through the LED. The basic idea consists in making the second converter to process only the low frequency ripple of the first converter, thus smoothing the LED current. In this way, the low frequency ripple is managed by the second stage so that the capacitance of the first stage can be significantly reduced. The proposed control method can achieve better results for the low frequency compensation. Besides that, a high power factor and a low harmonic content are obtained, fulfilling the IEC 61000-3-2 class C requirements. A laboratory prototype with a rated power of 75 W and an input voltage of 220 Vrms/60 Hz was built in order to show the feasibility of the idea. The measured overall efficiency of the converter was 91% and electrolytic capacitors were avoided.

A two-phase driving approach for light-emitting-diode (LED) applications is proposed in this paper. In the approach, two rectangular AC sources are employed so that the output current ripple can be significantly reduced. It leads to the elimination of electrolytic capacitor from the driver circuit. The approach is realised by a dual asymmetrical half-bridge converter with LEDs as the load. Considering the mandatory lighting standard for an AC/DC LED driver, the half-bridges are preceded by a valley-fill circuit for meeting the input power factor (PF) and current harmonic distortion requirements. Unlike other existing interleaved LED drivers that can only obtain low current ripples in certain operating points, the proposed approach can maintain a constant output current at all times even under large duty cycle dynamics due to the use of a valley-fill circuit. To validate the feasibility of the proposed approach, a 13 W prototype is built and tested experimentally.

Summary Light emitting diode (LED) driver systems are now moving toward reduced processing power to improve conversion efficiency in indoor and outdoor applications. LED drivers connected to a single‐phase supply must meet the requirements for power factor correction with lower input current harmonics to maintain the alternating current (AC) power grid's quality and maintain a constant current through the LED load to eliminate the flickering effect in the light output. An LED driver is required to fulfill these requirements. In this paper, a new reduced processing power LED driver is proposed. By splitting the output capacitor into two capacitors and with the help of hardware design, the processing power can be reduced by using fewer semiconductors than in earlier designs. The proposed driver employs a simple ripple cancellation control approach to eliminate the 100 Hz ripple in the LED load current. Using this principle, an LED driver was designed and tested. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed LED driver achieved an input power factor close to unity with lower input current harmonics and 92.5% of peak efficiency when operating at full power.
