Offshore Faulting In The Gulf Of The Farallones

Abstract

Extensive marine geophysical surveys were conducted in the Gulf of the Farallones as part of the predesign studies for the Southwest Ocean Outfall, a major element of San Francisco's wastewater master plaĨ nterpretation of the geophysical data was aided by geologic studies and the results of an offshore boring and vibratory coring program.The Outfall will cross the San Andreas fault, which was located and delineated as a zone of en echelon breaks separating horizontally-bedded deposits from a thinly-bedded anticlinal structure. The Seal Cove and Pilarcitos faults were also located, but were found to be beyond the extent of the planned Outfall structure. Special joints have been designed for the San Andreas fault zone portion of the Outfall conduits.
