Oil prices, biofuels production and food security: past trends and future challenges

Abstract: Using US and global data we estimate autoregressive models of US and global food prices as a function of oil prices, GDP per capita and biofuels production. Our model results show: (1) biofuels production and crude oil prices have a statistically significant effect on food prices in the US and globally; (2) during the global food price spike in 2008, increases in US biofuels production and the US crude oil price accounted for 38 and 41 %, respectively, of the increase in US food prices; (3) during the global f… Show more

“…Cross-sectoral effects (and ensuing policy failures) highlight the need to take account of these effects when designing sustainable food policies [63]. From a wider perspective, it is also imperative to consider trade-offs and synergies relating to the water-energy-food nexus [4,64], e.g., the effect of biofuel production on food security [65]. Previous research has identified food policy silos, which can prevent an appropriate response to issues that transcend specific sectors [64].…”

“…Because these resources are limited, the expansion may lead to the reduction of food crop supplies (Büyüktahtakın and Cobuloglu 2015;De Martino Jannuzzi 1991;Fradj and Jayet 2016;Herrmann et al 2017). To and Grafton (2015) provided evidence that a global increase in oil price and biofuel demand has contributed a significant role in agricultural commodity price fluctuations.…”

“…This could lead to an increase in food prices if unchecked. Economic models are developed to analyze the effect of the biofuel expansion, land use allocation, and biofuel-food price interactions [79][80][81][82][83][84][85]. These models are also used to address uncertainties related to iLUC emissions [86,87].…”
