Oil Spill Sorber Based on Extrinsically Magnetizable Porous Geopolymer

Abstract: Environmental impacts are increasingly due to the human polluting activities. Therefore, there is a need to develop technologies capable of removing contamination and driving the impacted environment as close as possible to its inherent characteristics. One of the major problems still faced is the spill of oil into water. Therefore, to solve the environmental problem, this work shows the use of magnetically modified geopolymer materials as an oil remover from water with a magnet’s aid. The results obtained wer… Show more

“…However, increasing the amount of ZFO-CTAB MNPs to 0.05 g reduced the GOR values to 1.45 ± 0.82, 8.96 ± 0.88, 8.82 ± 0.88 and 1.45 ± 0.86 g/g for crude, diesel engine, gasoline engine and used motor oil, respectively. Other researchers have also reported a decrease in GOR values with increasing sorbent amounts (Amar et al , 2021; Ognjanovic et al , 2008; Silveira Maranhão et al , 2021). For example, increasing the sorbent (natural wool fibers) amount from 0.04 g to 0.18 g was reported to reduce motor oil sorption capacity from 33 to 23 g/g (Ognjanovic et al , 2008).…”

“…In 2018, urea-loaded poly(butylene succinate) was used as a bioremediation system [ 40 ], and then in 2019, a magnetizable version of this polymer [ 41 ] showed an ORC equal to 11 g/g. Finally, in 2021 surface-modified magnetite was produced and tested, showing an ORC of 28 g/g [ 42 ], and an extrinsically magnetizable porous geopolymer presented an intrinsic oil removal capability (IORC) of 150 g/g [ 43 ].…”
