Ointment ofBrassica oleraceavar.capitataMatures the Extracellular Matrix in Skin Wounds of Wistar Rats

Abstract: Wound healing is a complex process that aims to restore damaged tissue. Phytotherapeutics, such as cabbage, Brassica oleracea var. capitata (Brassicaceae), and sunflower, Helianthus annuus L. (Asteraceae) oil, are used as wound healers. Five circular wounds, each 12 mm in diameter, were made in the dorsolateral region of each rat. The animals were divided into four groups: balsam (B. oleracea); ointment (B. oleracea); sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus); control (saline solution 0.9%). These products were applie… Show more

“…By week 2, type I collagen again becomes the principal collagen produced by fibroblasts. Type I and type III collagen are formed in skin in a higher proportion in relation to other types and are maintained in a fixed relative proportion to one another in normal skin tissue (Cheng et al, 2011;Sarandy et al, 2015).…”

“…The use of plant based strategies is opening a new perspective for the treatment of skin wounds, mainly in developing countries, once it represents a simple, low cost, and affordable therapy [1, 7, 5658]. There are several studies indicating beneficial effects of herbal medicines in all phases of the healing process.…”

“…These parameters indicate if the wound closure follows a normal process, in which the newly formed tissue gradually develops drastic structural changes to reconstitute the morphofunctional characteristics of the intact skin. Works which demonstrated the importance of these analyses assert that the type and quantity of collagen fibers deposited on the tissue can be used as a marker of tissue mechanical resistance [2, 3, 9, 58]. The connective and epithelial tissues form a support structure to promote the correct closure of the wound [57, 63], reducing the chances of opportunistic infections in the wounded area [38, 64].…”

“…Moreover, wound healing agent showed the efficient functioning via the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Sarandy et al (2015) evaluated the reduction of the wound area, reconstruction of extracellular matrix and cell proliferation of the cutaneous scar tissue of Wistar rats treated with ointment Brassica oleracea var. capitata extract.…”
