Oklahoma’s coordinated response to more than a decade of elevated seismicity

Abstract: In the period between 1961 and 2008, Oklahoma, USA, averaged about two M ≥3.0 earthquakes per year, with no damage to any built infrastructure. A substantial increase in seismic activity was first observed in 2009, when there were 20 M ≥3.0 earthquakes, and activity peaked in 2015, when over 900 M ≥3.0 earthquakes occurred. Because of the unprecedented increase in seismic activity, the governor’s office of Oklahoma formed a Coordinating Council of researchers, regulators, industry, and other stakeholders in 20… Show more

“…When those thresholds are passed, certain action is taken in an attempt to mitigate seismicity. In response to heightened seismicity, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission instituted several hazard mitigation procedures (Murray et al., 2023) including a “traffic‐light style” well permitting system (Baker, 2015; Zhang et al., 2020). However, despite multiple mitigation efforts, three large magnitude earthquake sequences occurred in 2016 ( M 5.1 Fairview, M 5.0 Cushing, and M 5.8 Pawnee).…”
