Oleuropein

Abstract: Oleuropein, a novel immunomodulator derived from olive tree, was assessed in vitro and in experimental sepsis by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After addition in monocyte and neutrophil cultures, malondialdehyde, TNF-alpha, IL-6, and bacterial counts were estimated in supernatants. Acute pyelonephritis was induced in 70 rabbits after inoculation of pathogen in the renal pelvis. Intravenous therapy was administered in four groups postchallenge by one multidrug-resistant isolate (A, controls; B, oleuropein; C, amikacin… Show more

“…In this context, many scientists have focused their attention on the possibility of using individual EVOO polyphenolic compounds like oleuropein, as a promising alternative anti-inflammatory agent, due to its capability to inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines [58,59] and lipoxygenase activity [4], or to modulate inflammatory parameters [60].…”

“…Some studies documented that oleuropein elicits anti-inflammatory effects by lipoxygenase activity, production of leukotriene B4 [38], inhibiting biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines [39] or modulating inflammatory parameters [40]. In particular, Impellizzeri et al [40] reported that administration of oleuropein in a mouse model of carrageenan-induced pleurisy causes a significant reduction of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and nitric oxide (NO).…”

“…Oleuropein is the most abundant biophenol and is the major bioactive compound found in olive leaves (Aouidi et al, 2012). In many in vivo and in vitro studies, oleuropein showed various biologic activities including antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-ischemic, antihypertensive, anticoagulant, hypolipidemic, and anticancer activities (AlShaal, Karabet, & Daghestani., 2019;Andreadou et al, 2006;Giamarellos-Bourboulis et al, 2006;Hamdi & Castellon, 2005;Himour, Yahia, & Belattar, 2017;Romero et al, 2016).…”
