OLFACTORY PERCEPTION OF PHEROMONE AND HOSTODOUR ENANTIOMERS BY IPS TYPOGRAPHUS (COLEOPTERA: SCOLYTIDAE)

Abstract: Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from adult male and female beetles to enantiomers of their pheromone, cis-verbenol, and the precursor, tt-pinene. (S)-(-)-a-pinene, the precursor for (S)-(-)-c/s-verbenol, elicited significantly greater responses in both males and females than did the (R)-(+)-enantiomer. Male beetles were more responsive to the (S)-(-)-a-pinene than female beetles. The response of female beetles was significantly greater to (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol than to the (R)-(+)-enantiomer. Although E… Show more

“…For some species, however, the reason may also be low local abundance in the years of the study, instead of not having primary attraction. One of the missing species, Ips typographus, has been shown to have primary attraction (RUDINSKY et al 1971;DICKENS 1978;AUSTARW et al 1986).…”

“…Evidence of primary attraction in scolytids has accumulated the last years (DICKENS 1978;PAYNE 1986;VASECHKO 1988;GRIES et al 1989). Several species rely only on host volatiles and are lacking pheromones, once thought to be ubiquitous among scolytids.…”

“…The occurrence of a possible synergism between (S)-cts-verbenol and ipsdienol that would attract at distance, has been implied (KLIMETZEK and VITE 1986). Complementary, 2-methyl-3-butene-2-01 is known to induce landing behavior in 0. erosus as well as in Ips rypogruphus ( V I T~ et al 1978;DICKENS 1978). In I .…”
