Feeding by Pieris brassicae or P. rapae caterpillars on Brussels sprouts plants induces the emission of synomones that attract natural enemies of the caterpillars, Cotesia glomerata, a generalist parasitoid, and C. rubecula, a specialist on P. rapae. Previous research on this tritrophic system has identified a large number of volatiles in the headspace of herbivore-damaged Brussels sprouts plants, and this paper addresses the question which of these volatiles are perceived by the two parasitoid species. Headspace odors from both P. brassicae-and P. rapae-damaged Brussels sprouts plants were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography electroantennogram (GC-EAG) detection. Twenty volatiles evoked consistent EAG reactions in the antennae of both species and nineteen of these volatiles could be identified with GC-MS. One component that could not be identified due to its low concentration, evoked EAG responses in antennae of C. rubecula only. Possible consequences for searching behavior of the two parasitoid species are discussed.Key words. The hypothesis of primary attraction in Scolytidae and Curculionidae was tested in the field from late May throughout June 1979 and 1980 with 20 and 14 flight traps, respectively. The traps, designed especially to exclude the possibility of secondary attraction, were baited with billets of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) or Norway spruce (Picea abies), and empty controls. Tomicus piniperda, Hylastes brunneus, Hylastes cunicularius, Pityogenes bidentatus, Pityogenes chalcographus, Hylobius abietis and Pissodes pini were significantly more frequently caught in traps baited with pine or spruce than to empty controls, and the random flight hypothesis was rejected. The same species, except P. chalcographus, were also able to discriminate significantly between pine and spruce before landing. H. cunicularius was exclusively attracted to traps baited with Norway spruce, whereas the rest of the species preferred the traps baited with Scots pine. The mechanism used by the beetles in their host selection is olfactory sensing of chemical compounds. Host acceptance and nonhost rejecting starts before landing, implying the ability the perceive plant characteristics at a distance (primary attraction). Zusammenfassung Primäranlockung bei der Wirtserkennung der Borken‐ und Rüsselkäfer (Col., Scolytidae und Curculionidae) Es wurde die Hypothese der Primäranlockung bei den Koniferen‐Scolytiden und ‐Curculioniden im Freiland im Mai und Juni 1979 und 1980 mit Hilfe von 20 bzw. 14 Flugfallen getestet. Die auf die Ausschaltung der Sekundäranlockung angelegten Fallen wurden mit Holzstücken der Kiefer (Pinus sylvestris) oder Fichte (Picea abies) beködert. Tomicus piniperda, Hylastes brunnens, Hylastes cunicularius, Pityogenes bidentatus, Pityogenes chalcographus, Hylobius abietis und Pissodes pini wurden in derart beköderten Fallen signifikant stärker gefangen als in leeren Fallen, wodurch die Zufallsflug‐Hypothese verworfen werden konnte. Dieselben Arten, mit Ausnahme von P. chalcographus, waren auch imstande, vor der Landung zwischen Kiefer und Fichte zu unterscheiden. H. cunicularius wurde ausschließlich in mit Fichtenholz beköderten Fallen gefangen. Der dieser Wirtswahl zugrunde liegende Mechanismus beruht auf der Geruchswahrnehmung chemischer Verbindungen. Die Entscheidung Annahme/Ablehnung wird vor der Landung getroffen. Sie impliziert die Fähigkeit zur Wahrnehmung von Pflanzenmerkmalen aus der Entfernung (Primäranlockung).

Under field conditions, the pheromone attractant responses of the scolytids Orthotomicus erosus and Ips sexdentatus were significantly reduced by the addition of one of the oxidation products of α‐pinene, verbenone, to the attractive volatiles 2‐methyl‐3‐butene‐2‐ol plus ipsdienol. Catches in flight barrier traps also decreased when (S)‐cis‐verbenol was added to the dual bait mixture; the inhibitory action of the terpene alcohol was more noticeable upon the female populations of both species. The observed patterns of behavior might reflect the outcome of a long process of competition among Ips species. Zusammenfassung Hemmende Wirkung von (S)‐cis‐Verbenol und Verbenon auf die Anlockung von Orthotomicus erosus (Woll.) und Ips sexdentatus Boern. (Col., Scolyüdae) an Pheromonfalien Die Lockwirkung der Pheromonkombination 2‐Methyl‐3‐Buten‐2‐ol plus rac. Ipsdienol auf Orthotomicus erosus und Ips sexdentatus wurde durch den Zusatz von Verbenon stark reduziert. Wenn die Lockstoffkombination zusammen mit (S)‐cis‐Verbenol ausgebracht wurde, war die Zahl der in Flugbarrierefallen gefangenen Käfer ebenfalls wesentlich geringer. Dabei hemmte der Terpenalkohol den Anflug der Weibchen stärker als den der Männchen. Das beobachtete Verhaltensmuster wird als Ergebnis einer interspezifischen Konkurrenz zwischen den sympatrischen Ips‐Arten gedeutet.
