Oligomeric proanthocyanidins protect myocardium by mitigating left ventricular remodeling in isoproterenol‐induced postmyocardial infarction

Abstract: A B S T R A C TExtracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling is a major pathophysiological process during post-myocardial infarction (MI). The activation, differentiation, and proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts to myofibroblasts regulate the expression of ECM proteins. The signaling by bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-4), an extracellular ligand of the TGF-b family, has recently been identified as an essential pathway in regulating cardiovascular dysfunctions including myocardial fibrosis. Oligomeric proanthocyanidin… Show more

“…In addition, type I and III collagens were seen significantly upregulated in the vascular tissues during stress only when E 2 was deficient in the rats ( Figures 6C–F ). Massive deposition of type I and III collagens induced by OVX and sustained ISO stimulation have been reported in the myocardium but rarely reported in the vessel ( 48 , 49 ). Our findings therefore demonstrate that the synergy of stress and E 2 deficiency aggravates massive collagen deposition in the aortic vessels, which causes vascular stiffness and vasomotor dysfunctions.…”

“…Oxidative stress and excessive formation of free radicals are pathophysiological driving forces implicated in tissue remodeling, hypertrophy, and organ malfunction . Therefore, the enhancement of the antioxidant defense system is essential to safe guard tissue and maintains an optimal physiological function.…”

“…Thus, TGF-β is widely studied in the transforming growth factor family and involved in the fibrosis formation of tissues and organs. Its overexpression in cardiac tissue can cause cardiac hypertrophy or myocardial fibrosis, which is involved in the process of ventricular remodeling ( 43 , 44 ). TGF-β is a multifunctional cytokine that can participate in the process of cell proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation ( 45 ).…”
