“…Moreover, the activation of vagal tone by EPA could also inhibit adrenergically mediated AF in patients with heart failure. The preventive effect of n-3 PUFA supplementation on AF has also been shown in patients with other types of structural heart disease [34,35]. However, our results could not show that n-3 PUFA was associated with a reduced risk of AF, irrespective of etiological factors.…”

“…Among elderly adults, consumption of an EPA/DHA-rich fish based diet is associated with a lower incidence of AF. Supplementation with n-3 PUFAs reduced both all-cause mortality and incidence of 1-year AF in patients with post-myocardial infarction, 13 decreased AF recurrence after pulmonary vein antrum isolation, 14 and increased serum concentration of n-3 PUFAs, especially DHA, protected against AF. 15 LXs, RSVs, PRs and maresins stop leukocyte entry into the exudates as well as counter-regulate the main signs of inflammation.…”

“…All diagnoses were coded according to the ICD-9 (Table 1). Information on the exposure to cardiovascular treatments was obtained from the prescriptions' database, considering the drugs identifying underlying clinical conditions, such as statins and treatments for hypertension and diabetes, as previously described [18][19][20][21] and indicated in Table 1.…”
