Omicron SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern: A Review on its Transmissibility, Immune Evasion, Reinfection, and Severity

Abstract: Background: Omicron, the new Covid-19 variant, has already become dominant in many countries and is spreading at an unprecedented speed. The objective of this study was to review the existing literature on Omicron’s transmissibility, immune evasion, reinfection, and severity.Method: A literature search was performed in “PubMed”, “Web of Science”, “Scopus”, "ScienceDirect", “Google Scholar”, “medRxiv”, and “bioRxiv”. Data were extracted from articles that reported at least one of transmissibility, immune evasi… Show more

“…Previous research uncovered that the Omicron variation might be 10 times more transmissible than the wild type 46 . The capacity of Omicron to escape the vaccination may be two times greater than that of the Delta version, according to 132 3D structures of antibody receptor binding domains (RBDs) 47 . Omicron possesses a novel mode of entry into cells, making it more effective than Delta at entering cells and less efficient at causing lung illness.…”

“…In contrast, the Beta variant had fewer infections, and Delta was approximately two‐fold more efficient in disease spread than the wild type. The Omicron variation has an infection rate four times greater than the wild type, while the Delta variant had an infection rate that was twice as high 47 . Various circumstances can influence the Omicron variant’s increased transmission capacity.…”

“…We are in a rapid infection spread caused by the virus (SARS-CoV-2) since it continuously mutates and spreads rapidly [14] . Twelve variants of the virus have already been seen as of now, the Delta and the latest Omicron [15] being considered the most contagious [16] . In this evolving situation, widespread immunization is critical to preventing the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic.…”

“…2,3 Although adverse outcomes in the present omicron-wave is not as severe as the delta-variant, a significant number of patients are being hospitalized and high transmission of these variants has resulted in more hospitalizations as compared to the previous waves in some countries. [3][4][5][6] A number of prognostic markers have been identified to indicate severity of Covid-19. 7,8 These include clinical markers such as tachypnea, tachycardia and hypoxia, radiological abnormalities, and laboratory-based biomarkers.…”
