On Accuracy of Analytical Modeling of Lamb Wave Scattering at Delaminations in Multilayered Isotropic Plates

Abstract: The study investigates the accuracy of analytical solutions to the fundamental anti-symmetric Lamb wave scattering at delamination in multilayered isotropic plates. The analytical models are based on the wave function expansion method and Born approximation within the framework of Mindlin plate theory. The study validates the accuracy of modeling the delamination as an inhomogeneity with reduced bending rigidity in predicting Lamb wave scattering induced by geometry change at the delaminated region. A good agr… Show more

“…In this study, only the deformations Fig. 4 shows a comparison of the A0 Lamb wave group velocity dispersion curve calculated by the FE simulations and analytical results, which is based on the Mindlin plate theory [48]. The results show that there is very good agreement between the FE calculated and analytical results.…”

“…Guided waves are mechanical stress waves propagating along the structures and guided by its boundaries. Lamb wave refers to guided wave propagates in plates with wavelength larger or of the order of the plate thickness [8]- [11]. In the last two decades, Lamb wave has been widely used for damage detection of plate-like structures [12]- [15].…”

“…The importance of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in engineering field is currently undisputed, and benefits of SHM systems have been discussed in many papers [1]- [4]. SHM systems based on ultrasonic guided waves, such as Rayleigh wave [5] [6], Lamb wave [7], [8] and torsional wave [9]- [10], have attracted attention over the past two decades [12]- [14], and different damage detection techniques using linear guided wave were developed and deployed across many industries [15]- [17]. One of the main objectives of the SHM systems is to provide the information in a real time, which is required for structural life prognosis and maintenance scheduling.…”
