On becoming multicultural in a monocultural research world: A conceptual approach to studying ethnocultural diversity.

Abstract: Race, culture, and ethnicity are critical components of the human experience, yet they are often treated as nuisance variables or as post hoc explanations for poorly predicted results. Mandates to pay attention to ethnocultural diversity in research have largely been ignored. Here, we affirm some basic principles of multicultural psychology in conceptually grounded research. We first identify the importance of clear and conceptually guided ethnocultural research, and describe multiple perspectives in the field… Show more

“…The wide range of characteristics and factors measured in these scales attest to both the complexity and the nebulous nature of acculturation. Acculturation measures are used often in health research, yet there is little research that investigates the extent to which acculturation measures, as currently used, reliably predict health outcomes (Hall et al., ). The research presented here tests the utility of acculturation in regard to alcohol consumption.…”

“…There is growing consensus that cultural adaptations of psychosocial interventions are more effective than usual care or other control conditions, yet variability remains in how best to develop culture‐specific interventions and what is changed during cultural adaptations. Some argue for developing interventions within a specific cultural context to address culture‐specific concerns, as contrasted with the approach we took to adapt an existing, evidence‐based counseling intervention. Adapting existing evidence‐based psychosocial interventions is supported by meta‐analyses, yet a risk with adaptation is that modifications can decrease intervention fidelity and effectiveness.…”

“…Second, we recommend that developmental scientists articulate more precisely what mechanisms lead to observed differences. Although racial, ethnic, and national categories are important and should be included in research, they are proxies for markers of culture, pre‐ and post‐immigration histories, and social and economic stratification, and they should be acknowledged as such (Hall, Yip, & Zárate, ). Similarly, generational status and language are often proxies for acculturation, which is a much more nuanced cultural experience (Quintana et al, ).…”
