On‐chip electromembrane extraction of acidic drugs

Abstract: In the present work, a new supported liquid membrane (SLM) has been developed for on‐chip electromembrane extraction of acidic drugs combined with HPLC or CE, providing significantly higher stability than those reported up to date. The target analytes are five widely used non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): ibuprofen (IBU), diclofenac (DIC), naproxen (NAX), ketoprofen (KTP) and salicylic acid (SAL). Two different microchip devices were used, both consisted basically of two poly(methyl methacrylate)… Show more

“…As a miniaturized EME system, μ-EME is operated under stagnant conditions. Other miniaturized systems, such as the chip-based, are however often operated in continuous flow mode. In this mode, pH changes of solutions are expected to be minor as fresh solution is continuously delivered. However, bubbles can still form on normal electrodes.…”

“…First, the stability and performance of 1-octanol with plasma samples was attempted improved by mixing it 1:1 (weight ratio) with 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE), based on previous reports [21,22,34]. However, this did not improve the stability.…”

“…For acids, 1-octanol is often used in traditional EME, but under dynamic conditions stability is limited. This was addressed in recent work, where 1-undecanol mixed with NPOE (1:3) was proposed as an efficient and stable SLM for acidic pharmaceuticals during 8 h of continuous operation [19]. Addition of 1-undecanol to the SLM increased the hydrogen bond acidity, and this favored transfer of deprotonated acidic pharmaceuticals due to their hydrogen bond basicity.…”
