“…How to ethically implement such medical pluralism (or whether, where, and when medical pluralism is desirable) remains a thorny question. Labate et al (2022), for example, in their response to Schenberg and Gerber, ask whether the "validation" of Indigenous practices with the tools and epistemologies of Western science can perpetuate the subordination of non-Western ways of knowing. They raise further questions about competing claims to intellectual property in the case of ayahuasca, whose use has also been central to syncretic religious movements that have been historically marginalized in Brazil (see also Smith et al (2022), for further discussion of the issue of intellectual property).…”

“…As pointed out by Labate et al (in press), the simple transposition of biomedical research with its own instruments and premises to the forest does not necessarily signify the promotion of a genuine intercultural dialogue between two distinct systems of knowledge and, consequently, the overcoming of epistemological injustices, although it may reflect an interesting methodological change within the scope of biomedicine. In the same fashion, not all research developed from traditional knowledge associated with genetic heritage carried out in laboratories necessarily commits epistemological injustices against the holders of such knowledge.…”

“…We would like to thank Labate et al (2022) for their commentary on our article on epistemic injustices against Indigenous Peoples in the biomedical study of ayahuasca (Schenberg & Gerber, 2022). Given the multifaceted and multidisciplinary approach necessary to improve knowledge, practices, and regulation of ayahuasca use, we need constructive criticism from diverse fields including anthropology, policy, law, biomedicine, philosophy, and sociology, among others.…”
