On Having a Goal: Goals as Representations or Behavior

Abstract: The present article discusses the concepts of having a goal and of goal-directed behavior from a behavior-analytic perspective. In clinical psychology as well as in the study of human behavior at large, goals delineate an important area of investigation when it comes to health, well-being, and behavioral change. While concepts like goals and goal-directed behavior may be more frequently used outside the theoretical boundaries of behavior analysis, we argue that by incorporating recent behavior analytic researc… Show more

“…Is my goal for the walk serious exercise, or just getting out of the house to check the sunset? Careful goal setting is fundamentally important to effective behavior, and behaviorists have begun to give it some of the attention that it is due, beyond the literature on self-control (see, e.g., Foxall, 2004;O'Hora & Maglieri, 2006; and the excellent overview by Ramnerö & Törneke 2015). Having a purpose is a disposition, making some stimuli, responses, and reinforcers more powerful in controlling behavior than others; it changes O (Gollwitzer, 1993).…”

“…Despite these barriers, several behaviour-analytic textbooks have been published in Swedish (Eikeseth and Svartdal 2013;Karlsson 2010;Ramnerö and Törneke 2013) and Stockholm University offers an inter-departmental graduate level, BACB approved course sequence in behaviour analysis where half of the sequence is given through the Department of Special Education and half through the Department of Psychology (Roll-Pettersson et al 2010). To date, approximately 250 psychologists, special educators, social workers, educators and speech language pathologist employed by either habilitation centres or municipalities have taken these courses.…”

“…Cognitive conceptualizations typically include discussions of the importance of mental representations (e.g., Austin & Vancouver, 1996). However, behavioral conceptualization appeals instead to the environment (e.g., O'Hora & Maglieri, 2006;Ramnerö & Törneke, 2015). For example, behavior analysts have typically conceptualized goal setting as a form of rulegoverned behavior or as a contingencyspecifying stimulus (e.g., Agnew & Redmon, 1993).…”
