On kinematic and self-excited rail vehicle–track interaction

Abstract: The paper contains description of dynamical problems connected with the self-excitation and kinematic excitation of rail vehicle and railway track. Some phenomena are presented which may create high loads resulting in track degradation and fatigue of wheelset axles. An alternative approach to rail vehicle hunting is proposed. Examples of experimental investigations are given which show that the dynamical load acting on the track can be much higher than the static load.

“…Therefore, the main cause of rail corrugation is the coupling effect of wheel discs bending vibration and inner rail bending-torsional vibration under the condition of wheel-rail system with stick-slip negative slope. There are some related researches in [28][29][30], such as the self-excited vibration of wheel-rail system and the corresponding bending and torsional vibration modes, however, compared with those, this paper further analyzes the contact creep characteristics of inside and outside wheel-rail systems of leading and trailing wheelsets in detail. Meanwhile, combined with the modal analysis, the formation mechanism of rail corrugation is comprehensively explained in the presented paper.…”

“…The problem of a moving oscillator on a flexible beam has been extensively studied in the literature [8,9], which is one cause of instability in railway vehicles [10]. In a roller coaster, however, the varying dynamical loads and speed caused by travelling along a spatial trajectory may not be neglected.…”
