Review Progress in the Development of Control Strategies for the SBR ProcessThe sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process has shown great success in the treatment of industrial wastewater from intermittent discharge factories and for the treatment of domestic wastewater from medium or small towns. As automation technology has developed, many studies have been conducted to determine the optimal conditions for the SBR process. This review outlines the progress and application of control strategies that have been developed for the SBR process and provides a summary and comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of various control strategies, especially fixed-time control strategies and various real-time control strategies. Moreover, an analysis and discussion of novel optimal control methods for biologic nutrient removal are provided. Although previous studies in this field have greatly enriched our understanding of SBR systems, it is clear that many unsolved problems remain. Therefore, a summary of unanswered questions regarding control strategies for the SBR process is provided and future research directions are suggested.

Denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms (DPAO) are able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus simultaneously. The use of DPAO in EBPR systems results in a substantial saving on aeration cost and a lower sludge production when compared to anaerobic-aerobic EBPR systems. This process is usually studied in sequencing batch reactors (SBR) and monitored with off-line measurements. However, off-line monitoring implies low frequency data sampling and delay between sampling and obtainment of the results. For this reason, an online measurement such as titrimetry is strongly recommended to improve the daily management of the lab-scale SBR. This paper shows different applications of titrimetric measurements for on-line monitoring of DPAO lab-scale SBR cycles. The results demonstrate that titrimetry is a suitable tool for detecting the end of phosphorus release and carbon substrate depletion point in the anaerobic phase. Moreover, this paper proposes the indirect measurement of nitrate/nitrite uptake rate with titrimetric measurements, which allows the on-line estimation of its concentration during the anoxic phase. Therefore, titrimetry is an on-line measurement with a high potential to implement new control strategies in DPAO lab-scale SBR systems.

in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).In this work, an automatic strategy for acclimation of biomass to toxic wastewater biodegradation in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is proposed and evaluated. It is based on monitoring the airflow needs for regulating the dissolved oxygen concentration at a desired set point. The regulation is achieved by using a PID controller with an input/output linearizing feedforward part, using the airflow rate as input variable. A simple algorithm to detect the end of the reaction phase using this manipulated signal is proposed. The strategy was tested on a laboratory bioreactor using 4-chlorophenol as model toxic compound and two inocula from different sources. The results show that it is a viable alternative for automatic acclimation of biomass for toxic wastewater treatment in a SBR. Furthermore, the strategy is also suitable for the operation of the reactor after acclimation.
