On-line spectroscopic study of brominated flame retardant extraction in supercritical CO2

Abstract: Extraction of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) from polymers before disposal or recycling will alleviate negative environmental effects and ensure safe usage of recycled products. Supercritical CO2 is appealing as solvent owing to its green properties but also challenging due to its limited solvation power towards polar molecules. For a more comprehensive evaluation of supercritical extraction potentialities, we (i) developed an on-line analytical technique compatible with both UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopies… Show more

“…For example, infrared spectroscopy, traditionally used to differentiate plastics, can be applied to the sorting of electronic components [12,13]. The use of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) [14] has also been explored for sorting plastics from electronics, which are often contaminated with flame retardants [15,16]. These methods can be used to map PCBs and components, creating images in which each pixel represents a spectrum.…”

“…Apparatus for Solubility Study and Extraction in scCO 2 . The extraction and solubility performance of the extractants in scCO 2 were studied using the supercritical apparatus outlined in Xia et al's publication 44 on the extraction of brominated flame retardants from plastics, as shown in Figure 2. A custom-made pressure reactor (based on a commercial NS2430HC2 autoclave from Parr Instrumental Company, USA) was tailored to our specified requirements.…”

“…Because the concentration of TFP is proportional to its integrated absorbance according to the Beer− Lambert Law, an interpolation method can be used to determine the saturated concentration, which has been reported in detail in a previous publication. 44 The IR spectra of the extractant were collected with a 4 cm −1 resolution and obtained by the Fourier transformation of 64 interferograms.…”
