On Macroeconomic Impact of Fishing Effort Regulation: Measuring Bottom-Up Fish Harvesters’ Economy-Wide Contribution

Abstract: This research develops a hybrid input-output model to quantify the economy-wide impact of capture fisheries on the economy. The method regards capture fisheries to be the "carrier branches" producing "core inputs", which can drive the other fisheries sectors in the Ghosh supply-driven model. These fisheries sectors are all linked with the rest of the economy and can affect it through backward linkages in the Leontief demand-driven model. The empirical findings based on the Thai fisheries corroborate findings i… Show more

“…Most CGE models are based on social accounts, explicitly incorporate resource constraints, allow for input substitution, and have a strong price-quantity integration, and they can tackle a broader set of issues than most IO models [12]. As an alternative to the input-output model, the computable general equilibrium model takes into account structural adaptations of an economy to changes in one or more economic components and allows for substitution of inputs, outputs, and trade effects in the event of economic uncertainty [53]. The CGE modelling is fully based on general equilibrium theory and, thus, regarded as being part of mainstream economics.…”

“…In the preparation phase, the facilitation team first gathered the indicators used within the ECOST project, through the production of the ECOST model [10,36] and the existing ECOPATH model [33,37]. Performance issues were chosen as one of the criteria for classifying the pertinence of a particular indicator.…”

“…So, any change in a system automatically affects other systems and take other systems' reaction into account. In particular, the linkage between social and economic systems is made through income distribution, the linkage between economic and ecological systems is made through changes in fish stock and marine environment, and the linkage between social and ecological systems is made through social response to environmental problems, concerns and states (Failler et al, 2014). This design enables us to evaluate fisheries management and policies from social, economic and ecological dimensions.…”
