On Maximizing Sensor Network Lifetime by Energy Balancing

Abstract: Abstract-Many physical systems, such as water/electricity distribution networks, are monitored by battery-powered Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Since battery replacement of sensor nodes is generally difficult, long-term monitoring can be only achieved if the operation of the WSN nodes contributes to a long WSN lifetime. Two prominent techniques to long WSN lifetime are i) optimal sensor activation and ii) efficient data gathering and forwarding based on compressive sensing. These techniques are feasible onl… Show more

“…It is worth noting the survey collected in [ 22 ], which analyzes the sensors to monitor traffic from the point of view of various criteria, including cost. In this study, it is highlighted that the new sensors tend to be of reduced dimensions, of low energy consumption and that, with a certain number of them, it is possible to design and configure a sophisticated wireless sensor network (WSN) that can cover multiple observations in a certain region [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…This is because the energy insufficiency of sensor nodes limits their operational life [39], and whenever the residual energy of a sensor node is exhausted, this node becomes inactive thus causing coverage holes. Consequently, the use of schemes aiming at the achievement of power control [40], data aggregation [41,42], energy efficiency [43][44][45], energy balancing [46][47][48], data compression and restoration [49][50][51], congestion avoidance, and congestion control [52][53][54][55][56] should be also considered. Likewise, the preservation of network connectivity is an issue of crucial importance for WSNs in order to be operational and thus has to be pursued [57][58][59][60].…”
