On mitigation of earthquake and landslide hazards in the eastern Himalayan region

Abstract: Mitigation of geological hazards through science and engineering applications is one of the most effective ways to reduce their impact on human life and local infrastructure. It involves precise mapping of hazards, assessment of their potential, monitoring, early warning, geotechnical treatment, design of vital infrastructural facilities and creating awareness at local levels. Several such initiatives have been taken at government level to deal with the earthquakes and landslides in the eastern Himalayan regio… Show more

“…Perhaps the most effective and practical approach is to take preventive measures and create awareness amongst the masses (Bansal and Verma, 2012;Bansal and Verma, 2013;Verma and Bansal, 2013). A recent study by Bansal et al (2022), details specific activities for mitigating the earthquake and landslide hazards in the eastern Himalayan region. A similar exercise could be useful for Mizoram state and its surroundings also.…”

“…Slope is considered to be one of the most important landslide conditioning factors because landslide is considered to be an event which is a manifestation of slope instability (Doke, 2017;Khaliq et al, 2023). Landslides tend to occur more in areas of steep slope than gentle slope (Pal et al, 2016;Bansal et al, 2022). Natural events like earthquakes and heavy rainfall often make weathered debris on the hill slope loose and they come down the slope under gravitational in uence causing landslides (Khullar, 2014).…”
