On positively charged dust in the coma of comet 67P

Abstract: Moment analysis of ion spectrograms measured by the Ion Composition Analyzer (ICA) in the coma of comet 67P typically produces an ion number density estimate markedly lower than the number density of free electrons as measured by the Mutual Impedance Probe (MIP) and the dual Langmuir Probe (LAP). While there are good reasons to distrust the ion density moment estimate in these circumstances, the issue cannot yet be considered fully understood and it is of interest to see if any natural non-instrumental cause i… Show more

“…Photoelectron emission counteracts the negative charge and may even (depending on the electron temperature) charge grains predominantly positively, but a follow-up study showed that positive grains also cannot carry a significant amount of the total charge in the plasma Vigren et al. ( 2022 ).…”

“…From the theoretical models applied to dust observations as described above (Vigren et al. 2021 , 2022 ), the likely answer is no. This contrasts to the strong electron depletion inferred for the Enceladus plume (Morooka et al.…”

“…where ν is the total ionisation frequency, r 0 (<< r) is the radius of the comet, and u i is the ion expansion velocity assumed constant and equal to the neutral velocity such that u n = u i = u. In this paper, we assume that the ion density is equal to the electron density, and no charged dust is present (Vigren et al 2021(Vigren et al , 2022. Further assumptions are needed to reach these expressions including equal ionisation frequency at all distances and stability on timescales of weeks.…”
