On Risk of Digital Twin Implementation in Marine Industry: Learning from Aviation Industry

Abstract: This paper presents some aspects of the risk and challenges associated with digital twin implementation in the marine industry by learning from the aviation industry where the digital twin is more widely employed. The digital twin applications in aviation and marine industries are presented and the main steps of developing a digital twin are discussed. The three main steps of sensors (measurements), model, and data analysis are identified and used in the study. The lessons from two recent accidents in the avia… Show more

“…However, a DT is not a "silver bullet". It will not solve all problems the world faces, because we cannot simply account for all scenarios the real-world accounts for (Ibrion et al, 2019). This document describes the usages and contexts of twinning and which problems they can answer, mainly focusing on their PoIs.…”

“…A DT equipped with decision-making capabilities has the capacity of taking actions on the environment as the virtual models are transferred to the physical twin. Consequently, this optimization must be evaluated also in terms of the ecological consequences of the selected action, 37 Figure 7.…”

“…As previously mentioned, this subgroup considers works that deal with more than one single phase or that describe the concept of DT across the product phases. All four papers (Giering and Dyck, 2021;Ibrion et al, 2019;Nikolopoulos and Boulougouris, 2020;Van Os, 2018) are conceptual description of a DT architecture suitable for the whole ship life cycle. Such papers are borderline with reviews like the ones presented in Section 1.1 but are not indexed as reviews in scientific databases.…”
