“…As pointed out by Moraes et al (2016), the region of “Rio Belmonte”, or “Rio Grande de Belmonte”, as referred by Wied, is the current Rio Jequitinhonha which was explored by Wied from mid‐August to 28 September 1816. It was not visited by any other explorer prior to 1827 (see Moraes et al, 2013b). According to IBGE (1958), the current municipality of Belmonte was established near the mouth of Rio Grande (current Rio Jequitinhonha) in the beginning of the 18th century by the Jesuit Joseph de Araújo Ferraz, who founded the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus between 1708 and 1712, with the “arraial” (settlement) taking the name of São Pedro do Rio Grande.…”
