On space syntax as a configurational theory of architecture from a situated observer’s viewpoint

Abstract: Abstract.A confi gurational theory of architecture (CTA) from a situated observer's viewpoint (SOV) is discussed. It includes the levels of description-proper, representation, and interpretation. It takes a bottom-up approach because a situated observer, who is on the ground with a building, typically builds her understanding of the building using immediately available elements, called perceptual primitives. Evidence from geometry, psychology/cognition, and spatial reasoning suggests that the level of descript… Show more

“…The current research also supports previous findings that environmental design can play a significant role in teamwork (Miwa & Hanyu, 2006; Pati et al, 2014; Rashid, 2012; Salas et al, 2007; Trzpuc & Martin, 2010; Ulrich et al, 2008; Zborowsky, Bunker-Heilmich, Morelli, & O’Neill, 2010). There is evidence that the design and layout of nurse stations can either inhibit or support teamwork (e.g., Rashid, Kampschroer, Wineman, & Zimring, 2006) and that a hybrid nurse station system may facilitate observation (e.g., Zborowsky et al, 2010).…”

“…The results of the qualitative data analyses and some values of quantitative analyses were consistent with previous studies that investigated this relationship in workplace environments, nearly all of which relied on qualitative data (Gharaveis, Hamilton, Shepley, Pati, & Rodiek, in press; Martin & Ciurzynski, 2015; Pati et al, 2014; Rashid, 2012; Trzpuc & Martin, 2010). Also, this study’s findings regarding visibility suggest that centralized layouts had higher visibility levels because staff tended to be located in the main nurse station or nearby areas.…”

“…Space syntax theories and techniques are useful in this regard, because they use “perceptual primitives” ( i.e. , objectively defined spatial elements which are perceptually meaningful) to define the objective structures of the environment, and then study how much of the variance in observed behavior and psychological responses can be explained by these structures [28,29,30]. …”
