On structured and diffuse seismicity, stiffness of earthquake foci, and nonlinearity of magnitude recurrence graphs

Abstract: Geological, geophysical and seismogeological studies are now conducted in a more detail and thus provide for de termining seismic sources with higher accuracy, from the first meters to first dozens of meters [Waldhauser, Schaff, 2008]. It is now possible to consider uncertainty ellipses of earthquake hypocenters, that are recorded in the updated Earthquake Cata logue, as surfaces of earthquake focus generators. In our article, it is accepted that a maximum horizontal size of an uncer tainty ellipse corresponds… Show more

“…From this and similar empirical equations [50,51], it can be calculated that the size of the fault source zone during an earthquake with up to K = 5 energy class does not exceed 10 m. It is proposed to estimate the lower limit of the displacement amplitude A (m) for brittle-plastic deformations under triaxial compression in the source zone L sz (km) by the following formula [52]:…”

“…Based on the data available in paper [32,Figure 3], where generalized empiric formula determined by a number of authors provide assessment of earthquake seismic focus size L as function of its magnitude M, we may assume that seismic focus size L of Bachat earthquake of magnitude M L =6.1, is at least 10km. This assessment correlates with aftershock zone size which according to data [10], covers not just the pit area but the space beyond its boundaries.…”
