On swelling behaviours of a bentonite under different water contents

Abstract: This study starts from a question: how would initial water content (wi) affect equilibrium swelling pressure (peq) of compacted bentonites in swelling pressure tests (ps tests)? However, discussions, based on experiments of a bentonite, Kunigel V1 (K_V1), are extended to issues: 1) wi effect on peq, 2) pore water density (ρpw), 3) co-existence of crystalline and osmotic swelling, and 4) relation between peq and compaction tests (pc tests). It is revealed that wi has insignificant effect on peq in general, thou… Show more

“…The swelling pressure can be measured by different methods, but different test methods produce different swelling pressure values [9,11,12]. It should be emphasized that it is ideal to think of the swelling pressure as the pressure measured when bentonite is wetted under the condition of limited volume [13]. The constant volume method, constant load method, and paired swell test (PS-test) were proposed to measure the swelling pressure [14].…”

“…Figure 2 shows the Mössbauer spectra (MS) of potassium hexaferrocyanide (1), bentonite (2), the complexes of potassium hexaferrocyanide (3) and copper hexaferrocyanide intercalated in bentonite (4), as well as the percolated complex P[AAm-AAc]:{BT-K (4−x) Cu x [Fe(CN) 6 ]} (5). The MS spectrum of potassium ferricyanide is a non-broadened singlet peak with a chemical shift of δ = −0.045 mm/s, which noticeably simplifies the analysis of gamma-spectra of the intercalated mineral and its percolated form in polymer matrix composition [26,27].…”

“…An important aspect is the controllability and predictability of the process of radionuclide sorption in the volume of a natural or synthetic matrix. The matrix materials should have acceptable physical parameters for application as structural backfill materials and the creation of artificial barriers in the construction of engineering structures [ 4 , 5 ].…”

“…The function of backfill materials is to form an impermeable zone around radioactive waste, since nuclear waste shall be kept separate from the environment. Backfill materials shall have swelling properties, since the swelling properties lead to development of impermeability in backfill materials [6,7].…”
