Forensic Radiometric Assessment of Cattle Organs and Chicken Giblets and Estimation of their Radiological Health Risk on Man

The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in twelve organs of cows and six chicken giblets samples from different locations of Delta region of Nigeria were studied using a 7.6 cm x 7.6 cm Na (TI) detector. Average activity concentrations of 727.09, 86.57 and 16.58 Bqkg–1 in cattle organs and 309.45, 57.71 and 9.02 Bqkg–1 in chicken parts were obtained for 40K, 226Ra and 232Th respectively. The highest activity concentration of 226Ra and 232Th in cattle was obtained in the rumen and heart respectively, while in chicken both were gotten in the gizzard. Radiological risk parameters of internal hazard index, absorb dose rate, annual effective dose, total annual effective ingestion dose and lifetime cancer risk resulting from consumption of cattle organs and chicken giblets were estimated for adult population based on the available data on consumption rate of samples. The mean values obtained are 0.68, 79.44 \(\eta Gy {h}^{-1}\), 48.71 µSvy–1, 107.50 µSvy–1 and 376.25\(x{10}^{-6}\) for cattle organs and are 0.41, 43.87 \(\eta Gy {h}^{-1}\), 26.90 µSvy–1, 57.98µSvy–1 and 202.93\(x{10}^{-6}\)for chicken giblets respectively. While the mean absorbed dose rate was slightly higher than world average, all other four radiological risk parameters values are below and within the recommended world permissible level for the adults. These results shows that there is no considerable radiological threat to public health from the consumption of cattle organs and chicken giblets in the Delta region of Nigeria. Thus, the cattle organs and chicken parts examined are radiologically safe for consumption.

Medicinal plants are very useful plants for humans with the various molecules and vitamins they contain. Most of the plants that grow spontaneously in nature were taken into agricultural production practices after their healing properties were discovered. The use of pure active ingredients obtained from plants is quite common. These effective compounds are also used by the pharmaceutical industry in the preparation of modern drug formulations. However, possible high levels of natural radionuclides in medicinal plants, particularly 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K, have upraised anxieties regarding radiological risks from plant consumption. In this study, the natural radionuclide activity concentrations of 8 commonly used medicinal plants in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey were determined by gamma spectrometric method using NaI(Tl) detector. The results of the analysis showed that the mean activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in medicinal plants were 21.05±2.80 Bq kg -1 , 55.99±4.32 Bq kg -1 and 908.29±11.86 Bq kg -1 , respectively. Mean transfer factor (TF) values from soil to plant were found to be 0.59, 0.88 and 1.52 for 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K, respectively. This present study shows that the use of these examined medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases will not pose any radiological health risks for humans.

Problem. Development and implementation of green technologies is both an urgent and a cost-effective scientific and engineering task. Therefore, the issues related to the study of renewable energy sources, which are used as the main sources of energy for electric vehicles, are quite relevant and promising. At the same time, an equally important question is how profitable is building solar charging stations in terms of both ecology and economy. Goal. The aim is calculation and analysis of technical and economic indicators of a solar charging station for electric vehicles (EV). Methodology. The analytical methods of studying the development and application of the ways and devices to transform the energy of the sun into electricity are used, as well as the methods of experimental research and mathematical methods of processing and modulation of the received results; methods of calculating technical and economic indicators. Results. The review of the literature on the development of renewable energy sources, in particular, solar power plants, and the spread of electric vehicles with the gradual displacement (replacement) of traditional cars working on internal combustion engines with electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV) was made. The main parameters and technical characteristics of the solar-powered charging station (SPCS) were studied. For the analysis and calculation of technical and economic indicators of SPCS for EV it is offered to take a SPP with a capacity of 20 kW as a basis. The calculation of SPCS electricity generation both for own consumption and for power supply of EV and the sale of surplus electricity to the general network at the “green tariff” was carried out. Originality. The technical and economic calculation of SCS was made taking into account the rise of electricity prices in Kharkiv region (Ukraine). Practical value. According to the analysis of the obtained results, it can be said that the payback period of SPCS for EV is about 7.9 years. If we consider the constant increase in the cost of electricity (approximately 15% per year), we can expect the payback after 6.8 years of operation.
