On the accuracy of RF positioning in multi-Capsule endoscopy

Abstract: In this paper, we derive and analyze cooperative localization bounds for endoscopic wireless capsule as it passes through the human gastrointestin (GI) tract. We derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) variance limits on location estimators which use measured received signal strength(RSS). Using a three-dimension human body model from a full wave simulation software and log-normal models for RSS propagation from implant organs to body surface, we calculate bounds on location estimators in three digestive orga… Show more

“…It is known that Cramer-Rao Lower Bound properly indicate the best possible performance of systems based on instantaneous measurement and RF based localization in general scenario has been studied as a typical case for CRLB calculation [9]. The CRLB for RF based WCE localization has been also investigated in [10] to provide an expectation on localization accuracy. However, when dynamic models are involved in a hybrid system, lower bound calculation becomes difficult.…”

“…Capsule Endoscopy has advantages for both patient and physician since it is noninvasive, more precise and even portable [1] [2]. Contrary to traditional methods such as Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy that can only reach the first or last several feet of the GI tract, the capsule endoscopy allows the visualization of the entire gastrointestinal tract [3].…”
