On the Adjusting of the Dynamic Coefficients of Tilting-Pad Journal Bearings

Abstract: This paper gives a theoretical and experimental contribution to the problem of active modiJication of the dynamic coefficients of tiltingpad journal bearings, aiming to increase the damping and stability of rotating systems. The theoretical studies for the calculation of the bearing coeficients are based on the fluid dynamics, specifically on the Rqrnolds equation, on the dynamics of multibody systems and on Premnted aa a Soclety of Triboiogists and Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASMEISTLE Tribology Confer… Show more

“…It is important to highlight, that the purpose of this study is solely to study the behavior of the disk motion due to the decrease in contact friction. Therefore, the fluid pressure forces such as derived in the work of Lund and Thomsen [28], Santos [29,30] and Santos et al [31,32] are not considered in this study once the lubrication regime is not hydrodynamic, but probably boundary or mixed. Fig.…”

“…A quite complete overview of the experimental and theoretical achievements on mechatronics applied to controllable journal bearings can be found in [5]. Many concepts for bearing adjustability/control utilize active oil injection [6][7][8] while other proposed concepts incorporating movable bearing pads, among others the very recent [9][10][11][12], the application of external forces in the bearing shell or the journal, for example magnetic [13][14][15][16], or piezo-mechanical [17][18][19] without changing the bearing's clearance geometry.…”

“…Examples of case (I) can be found in [2][3][4][5] using magnetic and piezoelectric pushers and in [6][7][8] using hydraulic actuators. Examples of case (II) can be found in variable impedance bearings [9], actively controlled bearing surface profiles or simply deformable bushes [10], active journal bearings with flexible sleeves [11,12], active lubricated bearings [13][14][15], or pressurized bearings [16,17] among others.…”

“…magnetic bearings [1], piezoelectric bearing pushers [2][3][4][5], hydraulic actuator journal bearings [6][7][8], variable impedance bearings [9], actively controlled bearing surface profiles or simply deformable bushes [10], active journal bearings with flexible sleeves [11,12], active lubricated bearings [13][14][15], or pressurized bearings [16,17] among others. The rapid development of these new mechatronic devices shows that the relative maturity of many "traditional technologies" implies little or no potential for significant improvements of machine performance.…”
