On the Benefits of Partial Channel State Information for Repetition Protocols in Block Fading Channels

Abstract: This paper studies the throughput performance of HARQ (hybrid automatic repeat request) protocols over block fading Gaussian channels. It proposes new protocols that use the available feedback bit(s) not only to request a retransmission, but also to inform the transmitter about the instantaneous channel quality. An explicit protocol construction is given for any number of retransmissions and any number of feedback bits. The novel protocol is shown to simultaneously realize the gains of HARQ and of power contro… Show more

“…According to the reward-renewal theorem [16], the longterm average consumed power is the ratio between the average transmit power between two consecutive renewals (sending a new data packet) E CSI K [P ] and the expected number of transmissions E CSI K [T ] needed to deliver the packet with up to K transmission attempts [8], [17] …”

“…In [8], a power adaptation was proposed to increase the throughput in the case of a discretized CSI. An asymptotically optimal power control algorithm that attains the diversity limit in long-term static channels has been presented in [9].…”

“…From another perspective, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is a well-known approach applied in wireless networks to increase the data transmission reliability and efciency [12]- [20]. The main idea behind the HARQ techniques is to reduce the data outage probability or increase the throughput by retransmitting the data that underwent bad channel conditions.…”
