On the change of electronic polarisability of an ion in a crystal

Abstract: A theory for the change in polarisabilities of ions in crystal environment from their free ion values is presented. The contribution to this change is shown to come from the pure third order perturbation and second order exchange terms in the perturbation energy expression for the system. These contributions are separately estimated. The main contribution is shown to arise from third order perturbation effect.
