On the Complication Risk of Early Amniocentesis versus Standard Amniocentesis

Abstract: In the last 6 years early amniocentesis for the prenatal diagnosis of chromosome aberrations has been established in many centers worldwide, but knowledge about the gynecological safety of the procedure is sparse. From 1990 to 1995 at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Oberhausen (Germany) 3,277 early amniocenteses (between weeks 11 and 14) and 1,808 standard amniocenteses were performed in low-risk indication groups (advanced maternal age and anxiety). A complete follow-up including reports of fetal outcome was ob… Show more

“…However, should the sonogram fail to provide an explanation, the woman is generally offered amniocentesis-an invasive procedure that carries a small risk of miscarriage. 35 1996].) This risk, and the fact that most anomalies detected by fetal diagnosis have neither treatment nor cure, often leads pregnant women to experience intense anxiety if they screen AFP-positive.…”

“…In two randomized studies [2,4], early amniocentesis was compared with standard amniocentesis at 15-16 gestational weeks. There was a significantly higher fetal loss rate after early amniocentesis in both studies.…”

“…Una década después de haber sido introducida, la AP es aún controversial en lo que se refiere a riesgos y morbididad fetal. Algunos estudios reportan mayor riesgo asociado al procedimiento (9-12) mientras otros destacan ser la AP segura y una alternativa a los otros métodos de colecta (13)(14)(15). En los trabajos publicados los resultados son influenciados por las características de la población y la metodología del procedimiento.…”
