On the conservation of Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Pilosa: Myrmecophagidae) in the core of Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras

Abstract: The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve (RPBR) represents the most important region in Honduras for conservation of the biodiversity of the country. From May 2017 to January 2019, we installed 24 camera traps in the RPBR to monitor big mammals, including Myrmecophaga tridactyla. In 1512 camera-trapping hours, the giant anteater was recorded in two photos. The photos presented herein of M. tridactyla are the first records of the species in the core of the RPBR. The protection of a vulnerable species such as M. tridac… Show more

“…Vitt et al 1998;Urbina-Cardona et al 2006;Medina-Rangel and Cárdenas-Árevalo 2015). We conclude that it is necessary to increase conservation actions within the RHBRP to reduce habitat loss, which is advancing very rapidly, affecting this and many other species that inhabit this important protected area, which is the most biodiverse in the country (see McCranie et al 2006;Martínez et al 2020;Turcios-Casco et al 2020).…”

“…The Wuarska forest where we report P. gutturosus, presents patches of recovering (~15 years old); before recovery, this area was invaded by non-native people, replacing these forest patches with crops and pastures for livestock (Ávila-Palma et al 2019). In addition to Martínez et al (2020) for Myrmercophaga tridactyla (Xenarthra) and Ávila-Palma et al (2019) for Mimon cozumelae (Chiroptera), our work highlights the need of a greater sampling effort in the area to continue monitoring and finding rare species. These records may indicate that there is still significant vegetation cover, and that Wuarska is recovering to harbor species rarely detected due to its significant vegetation cover.…”

“…The distance from one camera station to another was approximately 1 km, and a camera station consisted of two cameras facing one another. A total of six camera stations (12 cameras) were deployed from 12 November 2021 to 30 January 2022 (Martínez et al, 2020). These stations were checked after 78 days in the field, representing a sampling effort of 936 trap/ nights.…”
