On the dynamics of workforce-mix in a manpower system

Abstract: This paper focuses on a manpower system with a fixed number of jobs that uses both permanent and temporary staff. The dynamics of workforce-mix in such a system is modelled as an optimal control problem. The objective is to find the most economical workforce-mix for the manpower system, subject to the fluctuations in workforce caused by wastage and the hiring of temporary staff. The fluctuations in the workforce-mix are modelled using a model similar to the Vidale-Wolfe advertising model. The solution is found… Show more

“…Lee et al (2001) introduced a discrete-time OC model owing to schedule workforces on varied tasks to employ and to derogate various types of workforces. Ekhosuehi (2016) investigated the workforce planning system that appointed permanent and temporary workforces to various jobs by an OC model. Mouza (2010) adopted a comparatively dynamic system, including the systematic description of flows and stocks, and then advanced to formulate an OC model due to achieving some preassigned targets.…”

“…Finally, they applied the proposed model in a real-world organization as a case study. Ekhosuehi (2016) studied the workforce system with a variety of jobs that employed a temporary and permanent workforce. In this paper, the dynamics of workforce-mix was modeled as an optimal control problem.…”

“…Guerrazzi (2011) studied an inter-temporal optimizing model in which an infinitely lived arbitrator continuously sets the real wage for solving conflicts between workers and employers. Some articles attention to the workforce planning process such as Pakdaman (2018a, 2018b), Ekhosuehi (2016), Udom (2014), Mouza (2010). This study presented a workforce planning because of solving the workforce planning issue through the continuous-time optimal control approach considering the human resources strategy framework (that mentioned in Section 3).…”
