On the Equivalence of von Neumann and Thermodynamic Entropy

Abstract: In 1932, von Neumann argued for the equivalence of the thermodynamic entropy and −Trρ ln ρ, since known as the von Neumann entropy. Hemmo and Shenker (2006) recently challenged this argument by pointing out an alleged discrepancy between the two entropies in the single particle case, concluding that they must be distinct. In this article, their argument is shown to be problematic as it a) allows for a violation of the second law of thermodynamics and b) is based on an incorrect calculation of the von Neumann e… Show more

“…The entropy analysis of land use types is an information model that expresses the richness and orderliness of land use types through the number of land use types and the proportion of the unit area occupied by the types (Figure 3). Its principle is similar to that of thermodynamics, in which entropy represents the degree of molecular disorder in a thermodynamic system (Prunkl, 2018). We selected the standard deviation (S) of a simple statistical variable to represent the richness of land use type information.…”

“…Even more complications arise once we move to the quantum regime, because it is often assumed that these bounds also apply to the von Neumann entropy, and yet there are ongoing controversies about whether or not the von Neumann entropy is equivalent to the thermodynamic entropy and/or Shannon entropy[23][24][25]. We will discuss the von Neumann entropy further in Part II of this paper 5.…”
