Abstract:All organisms rely on metabolisma complex system of biochemical reactions that either release or absorb energyto sustain life. Organisms expend energy to develop, grow, survive and reproduce. The total energy expenditure of an animal, as indicated by their metabolic rate, increases as organisms get larger. Metabolic rate, however, scales disproportionately (allometrically) with body mass, such thaton a gram for gram basissmaller organisms have a higher mass-specific metabolic rate than larger organisms. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
