On the food of Chironomus costatus (Chironomidae: Diptera) from a shallow freshwater pond in South India

Abstract: A study has been made of the feeding of Chironomus costatus in a temporary freshwater pond in South India. It was found that, irrespective of the size of the larvae, the food composition was the same. The larvae were non-selective feeders in that the organisms enumerated in the water were also found in the gut.

“…This observation lends support to the view that this conchostracan is a non-selective feeder. This is in accordance with the findings on Artemia salina (Reeve, 1963, 966), S. dichotomus (Bernice, 1970) and on chironomid larvae (Alfred, 1974). Zooplankters such as cladocerans, copepods and ostacods were totally absent in the gut although these were present in the environment.…”

“…Zooplankters such as cladocerans, copepods and ostacods were totally absent in the gut although these were present in the environment. Similar situations were recorded in S. dichotomus (Bernice,197I ) and in chironomid larvae (Alfred, 1974). This probably be so because zooplankters are larger and mobile and hence they cannot be easily wafted into the gut by the feeding currents of these organisms.…”
