On the Formation of Honeycomb Superlattices from PbSe Quantum Dots: The Role of Solvent-Mediated Repulsion and Facet-to-Facet Attraction in NC Self-Assembly and Alignment

Abstract: Semiconductor superstructures made from assembled and epitaxially connected colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) hold promise for crystalline solids with atomic and nanoscale periodicity, whereby the band structure can be tuned by the geometry. The formation of especially the honeycomb superstructure on a liquid substrate is far from understood and suffers from weak replicability. Here, we introduce 1,4-butanediol as an unreactive substrate component, which is mixed with reactive ethylene glycol to tune for optimal re… Show more

“…These strategies seek to direct the SL toward specific lattice symmetries along the BCC → BCT → FCC pathway. Among these tuning parameters, core shape, ,,, NC charging, , bound ligand coverage, ,,,, free ligand fraction, , ligand length, ,, temperature, , solvent vapor environment, ,, and deposition method ,,,, have been noted as controllable parameters. Chief among these parameters are those related to the surface ligands: ligand coverage, ligand length, and free ligand fraction.…”

“…As such, coarse-graining is another simulation representation employed to reduce the number of simulation elements. One particular coarse-graining scheme is that of patchy particles, which has been used to represent anisotropic interactions of spherical particles, polymer-grafted nanoparticles, , CdSe–Au heterostructural NCs, and recently PbSe NCs . This final study was able to simulate systems of ∼10 4 particles assembling at a liquid–liquid interface.…”
