On the foundations of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory

Abstract: It has been widely assumed that partially quenched chiral perturbation theory is the correct lowenergy effective theory for partially quenched QCD. Here we present arguments supporting this assumption. First, we show that, for partially quenched QCD with staggered quarks, a transfer matrix can be constructed. This transfer matrix is not Hermitian, but it is bounded, and it can be used to construct correlation functions in the usual way. Combining these observations with an extension of the Vafa-Witten theorem … Show more

“…M R (t) and M θ (t) do not visually plateau until much larger times. For the magnitude, a constant fit in the shaded region 30 ≤ t ≤ 40 gives an effective mass M R (t) → M R = 0.4085(2) (13) which is close to the value 3 2 m π = 0.39911(35)(14) [24] indicated by the red line. For the phase, a constant fit to the shaded region 25 ≤ t ≤ 29 gives an effective mass M θ (t) → M θ = 0.296 (20) (12), which is consistent with the value M N − 3 2 m π = 0.32636(58)(34) [24] indicated by the red line.…”

“…Suitable statistical tools for analyzing θ i are found in the theory of circular statistics and as will be seen below that θ i is described by an approximately wrapped normal distribution. 3 This work is based on a high-statistics analysis of 500,000 nucleon correlation functions generated on a single ensemble of gauge-field configurations by the NPLQCD collaboration [24] with LQCD. This ensemble has a pion mass of m π ∼ 450 MeV, physical strange quark mass, lattice spacing ∼ 0.12 fm, and spacetime volume 32 3 × 96.…”
