On the glandular origin of seminal plasma lipids in man

Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the glandular origin of seminal fluid lipids in man. The triglycerides, the total cholesterol, the non-esterified fatty acid and the total phospholipids were measured in seminal plasma of vasectomized patients ( n = 8 ) and control subjects ( n = 15). The same parameters were measured in seminal plasma collected in three fractions from split ejaculates ( n = 10).The total cholesterol and the non-esterified fatty acid are principally prostatic in origin. The phospholipids are… Show more

“…These lipases provide a potential mechanism to break down neutral lipid transferred in microcarriers to females so the products can be used as fuel. Mammalian seminal fluid also contains lipases (47)(48)(49) and triacylglycerides (50,51), suggesting that the latter may be required, perhaps as a male-derived nutrient source, in the reproductive system of all higher organisms.…”

“…Cholesterol is present in seminal plasma and has been suggested to originate from the prostate (Eliasson, ), the seminal vesicles (Scott et al ., ), serum, and lymph (Jones, ). Investigations of split ejaculates and whole ejaculates from vasectomized and non‐vasectomized patients supported that cholesterol in seminal plasma primarily originates from the prostate (Vignon et al ., ). In line with this finding, it has been suggested that cholesterol is released from prostasomes (Ronquist & Brody, ; Kravets et al ., ).…”
