Solid‐state caloric effects as intrinsic thermal responses to different physical external stimuli (magnetic‐, uniaxial stress‐, pressure‐, and electric‐fields) can achieve a higher energy efficiency compared with traditional gas compression techniques. Among these effects, magnetocaloric energy conversion is regarded as the best available alternative and has been exploited extensively for promising application scenarios in the last decades. This review systematically introduces the magnetocaloric effect and its applications, and summarizes the corresponding representative magnetocaloric materials, as well as important progress in recent years. Specifically, the review focuses on some key understandings of the magnetocaloric effect by utilizing state‐of‐the‐art technical tools such as synchrotron X‐ray, neutron scattering, muon spin spectroscopy, positron annihilation spectroscopy, high magnetic fields, etc., and highlights their importance toward advanced materials design and development. An overview of the basic principles and applications of these advanced techniques on magnetocaloric materials is provided. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on further developments in this field are discussed. Further in‐depth understanding and manufacturing technology advancement combined with fast‐developed artificial intelligence and machine learning are expected to advance the magnetocaloric energy conversion technology closer to real applications.

This perspective provides an overview of the state of research and innovation in the areas of magnetocaloric and pyromagnetic materials, and electrocaloric and pyroelectric materials, including the overlapping sub‐areas of multicaloric and multipyro materials that can operate simultaneously under the application of magnetic and electric fields. These materials are critically examined for their potential to revolutionize cooling, heating, and energy‐harvesting applications. This perspective first summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art advancements and highlights recent significant developments. Then, it is identified and discussed that the prevailing challenges hindering the widespread adoption of technologies based on these materials. In this context, after consulting with members of the caloric and pyro communities, a technology roadmap is outlined to guide research efforts in overcoming current barriers to applications, with the goal of achieving impactful results by 2040. This roadmap emphasizes the importance of focusing on under‐researched materials, novel devices, and application spaces, paving the way for interdisciplinary efforts that can lead to significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

Direct measurement of magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in frustrated Gd-based molecular complexes

Generation of low temperatures below 1 K has been required for applications and fundamental research, given this, development of new materials utilized for demagnetization cooling has extensively been performed in recent years. Here, we studied two polynuclear Gd3+-based molecular compounds of Gd0.33[Gd4(OH)4(OAc)3][Rh4Zn4(L-cys)12]·32H2O (1Gd) and Gd0.33[Gd4(OH)4(OAc)3][Ir4Zn4(L-cys)12]·28H2O (2Gd) (L-cys = L-cysteinate) which show paramagnetic even at low temperatures due to their frustrated arrangement of Gd3+ ions. We discuss the magnitude of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in them inferred from the isothermal magnetic entropy change ($${\Delta S}_{\text{M}}$$ Δ S M ) from isothermal magnetization data. The − $$\Delta S_{{\text{M}}}^{{{\text{max}}}}$$ Δ S M max of 1Gd and 2Gd are 15.15 J kg−1 K−1 and 17.49 J kg−1 K−1 occur at 2.0 K under an applied field from 0 to 7 T, respectively. We also discussed the results of heat capacity measurement under magnetic fields to confirm the validity of the entropy change for 1Gd. Furthermore, with an aim of detecting their MCE directly, we have developed a new non-magnetic and metal-free magnetocaloric measurement cell. The adiabatic temperature change ($$\Delta T_{{{\text{ad}}}}$$ Δ T ad ) occurs in a small amount of sample on an order of 102-microgram with the application and removal of various magnitude magnetic fields starting from several initial temperatures were detected directly, to evaluate the potential of them to be a refrigerant for an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. The instrumental design for direct measurements of MCE is described along with the construction details.
