The article is dedicated to the memory of the outstanding scientist-zoologist Vladyslav Ivanovich Monchenko. A brief outline of the main events of the scientist’s activity is given. V. I. Monchenko’s scientific achievements include 191 works published during his lifetime (among them 8 monographs and textbooks), almost 50 newly described taxa of copepod crustaceans and their parasites, and a unique collection of Copepoda. Fundamen-tal generalisations carried out by V. I. Monchenko are recognised by scientists far beyond Ukraine. Those in-clude the life cycles of copepods and the mechanisms of their regulation, as well as the analysis of the mor-phological evolution of this group, including experiments on the presence of cryptic species among cyclopods. His contribution to the biogeography of the Ponto–Caspian Basin are also important. The scientist’s contribu-tion to the development of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) NAS of Ukraine is shown. Among the valuable collection specimens transferred by V. Monchenko to the NMNH are various sponges, sea anemones, and ascidians from the Southern Ocean, sailfish and jellyfish from the Pacific Ocean, crustaceans (Brucerolis bromleyana) and corals from the coast of New Zealand. The collection also includes 39 specimens of exotic gastropod and bivalve molluscs, collected in various parts of the Indian and Atlantic oceans and in bodies of fresh water of oceanic islands, as well as a skeleton of a female Cape petrel (Daption capense). The fish exhibition includes a mounted Copper shark (Carcharhinus brachyurus) caught by a researcher in the Pa-cific Ocean off the coast of Japan, and a wet specimen of a pilot fish (Naucrates ductor) from the Pacific Ocean. Sixty specimens of 17 species of fish from the Pacific Ocean and the Black Sea are stored in the scien-tific collection of the NMNH. The scientist received high recognition for his research and contributions into the development of science and scientific schools, he was elected a corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine (2000), an academician of the NAS of Ukraine (2003), became a laureate of the D. K. Zabolotny Prize (1975) and the State Prize of Ukraine in the Field of Science and Technology (2007), and received the honorary title ‘Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.’

The details of biography and scientific works of Boris Valkh (1876–1942), one of the leading zoologists who worked in eastern Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century, were analysed. Boris Valkh worked at the interface of zoology, plant protection, and epidemiology and he was a leading specialist in controlling the abundance of economically important groups of rodents and insects (plant protection stations) and an epidemiologist (studying zoonoses). At the same time, he was a nature protector, one of the key organizers of nature reserves in the southeast of Ukraine (Kamiani Mohyly, Bilosaraiska Kosa). The main attention in this review is paid to Valkh's research into zoology (ornithology, entomology, and theriology), and his work upon creation of zoological collections, including the one in the Bakhmut Museum of Local Lore, which was organized with his participation. All of these developments made by the scientist are considered along with details of his biography analysed using family archives and by conversations with Valkh’s descendents, including his grandson Boris Valkh, granddaughter Olympiada Gryshchenko, and great-grandson Sergei Valkh. Significant clarifications and important additions to the biography of Boris Valkh have been made, in particular regarding his education (once in Pavlohrad Gymnasium and twice in Kharkiv University), wife and children, as well as his long-term trips to Turkestan and Azerbaijan. The location of "Hory-Mohyly hamlet", from which most of the zoological samples collected by the Valkhs are derived, is clarified and determined as the same place that was marked on ancient maps as "Horemohylove" The history of the species Mus sergii described by Boris Valkh and its type locality were analysed. The information about the history of accumulation and further fate of his and his son Sergey’s zoological collections including mammal specimens from Hory-Mohyly is summarized. Unique original photographs from the family archives have been used, for most of which the dates and places of taking were determined. Pictures of collections and original zoological labels are also presented.

Aleksandr Sergeyevich Lysetskiy (1919–1991), whose centenary is celebrated this year, was a well-known ornithologist and mammologist and worked for a long time as an associate professor at the Department of Zoology at Kharkiv University. He has been interested in zoology since childhood and has been a young naturalist at the Kharkov Pioneer Palace and in Kharkiv Zoo as early as 1934. A.Lysetskiy started his studies at the biological faculty of KhNU in 1938 and finished it after the Great Patriotic War in 1948. Already in these years (from 1937 to 1947) he, together with his student friend A.Kunichenko, collected bat specimens, which are now stored in the Museum of Nature of KhNU. Since the labels of almost all specimens do not have the names of collectors, this collection was determined by us by comparing all the data (collection numbers, dates etc.) of the samples with the data given in their paper "To the bat fauna (Chiroptera) of Kharkiv region», which was published in 1952. In total, the Museum of Nature collection now has 139 specimens of bats from 18 species, 11 genera and 3 families. The majority – 129 specimens belong to the family Vespertilionidae. Of these, 52 specimens were collected by A.Lisetskiy (together with A.Kunichenko). This material is provided in the comparative table. Of the 9 species of this family represented in their collection, 6 species are representing fifty or more percent of the total number of all specimens stored in the Museum of Nature. These species are: Myotis dasycneme (66.6%), Plecotus auritus (75%), Nyctalus lasiopterus (100%), Nyctalus leisleri (55%), Pipistrellus nathusii (83.3%), Vespertilio murinus (100%). Only these collectors provided specimens of two species: these are the only specimen of Nyctalus lasiopterus and both specimens of Vespertilio murinus. Nowadays, all of these specimens (except Nyctalus lasiopterus, which is on display) are stored in separate boxes in the scientific collection of the museum. We can conclude that the collection of A.Lisetskiy and A.Kunichenko make up the prevailing part of the scientific collection of bats of the Museum of Nature of Kharkiv University.
